Mirjam Nuver | Ten Years of Hats

For the last ten years, Mirjam Nuver has produced two collections of hats each year: a winter and a summer collection. A characteristic of Mirjam's hats is that they are usually made of a single piece of material, shaped with incisions, pleats, folds and by turning. She rarely adds decorative elements, such as flowers, ribbons or bows to these clear forms.

Another characteristic that often typifies Mirjam's hats is variability. A simple adjustment may allow the wearer to change the form, and thereby also the function. Mirjam has also designed hat sets in which various parts can be assembled in different combinations.
This survey of her work reflects her broad range: from the sporty and functional, to the elegant and practical as well as the festive and theatrical ...

When Mirjam realised that the pace of two collections a year did not always allow her to examine themes fully, she decided to return to some previous ideas and explore these for her 2000-2001 winter collection. This resulted among others in variations on the familiar chapeaux claque and rain hats.

By introducing innovative materials, combinations of materials and colours, she has created atmosphere and image. The 2001 summer collection - Earth, Wind and Fire - again presents an entirely new approach. Earth hats are of hardened viscous straw, crumpled into amorphous structures; Wind hats ripple and flap gently and subtly
