Hilde Foks | Whirling light

‘What an idea!’. A remark I regularly hear when visitors first encounter jewellery at Galerie Ra. As if the pieces are the direct result of some flash of genius or inspiration, which happened to fly through the window… Of course a piece of jewellery may be born of an idea, but there are always more factors involved. Study, research, sketches, trials and models combine to create pieces that form a perfect synthesis of concept, form, material and construction. The new collection of jewellery by Hilde Foks has also emerged from a synthesis of factors. She has drawn her inspiration from the type of collar and cuff we know from sumptuous historical costumes. Hilde dyes nylon in the colours she needs and has small spiral springs made in steel or phosphor bronze. She then assembles these materials to form flexible constructions, which she subsequently tautens. The beads are both decorative and practical in function, providing an attractive finish to rough edges that might otherwise catch on clothing. Colour is essential, being either sober and subdued or vibrant and overwhelming, like light swirling around the neck or wrist.
