When Karl Fritsch graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich in 1994, I was so enthusiastic about his work that I offered him a solo-presentation at the KunstRai Fair, Amsterdam, in 1995. Since then he has grown into an internationally renowned and appreciated artist who constantly reinvents himself. Karl is a master in the handling of metal and stone and has an unmistakeable personal handwriting. He is particularly fascinated by the crafting of rings. In his recent pieces he has applied the ancient decorative technique of niëllo, featuring numbers and letters. Karl’s rings speak a kind of primal language and at the same time are genuine jewellery, jewels apace with the times, full of surprises and humour. They are rings that bond with their wearer; they create meaning; they become cherished.
